I build tools I wish existed.
A lot of my ideas begin with friction. I am trying to understand a problem, organize something important, or make a decision, and the tool in front of me does not work the way I need it to.
When I cannot find the right tool, I start thinking about what I would build instead. That question has led to calculators, planning utilities, Beast, and many unfinished experiments. The useful part is not always the final product. Sometimes it is learning the problem well enough to make a better attempt.
The first user I understand is usually me.
